RE: Cover a gasser's grille in the winter?

Not that I'm doubting but I would love to know what caused the engine failures.:h The one guy's motor spun a rod bearing due to too thick of an oil for that time of year from lack of lube getting through. And of what I was told by my neighbor, his truck bent two pushrods due to no oil pressure. He told me he was running correct wieght oil. I found that one hard to believe, but he did have bent pushrods. Could these "mishaps" have been avoided? Well, if you were sitting in the drivers seat and started to "hear" something, you may have had a chance to shut it down before tearing things up worse. JMO :W

RE: Cover a gasser's grille in the winter?

We have a remote start in the wife's Jeep and they are one of the gretest inventions since sliced bread.:W By the time she gets in there is hot air coming out of the heater (or cold air from the AC in the summer). I agree. We have one in the HHR. I should clarify myself on RS'ers. I'm not a fan of them, "because" I've known of some folks who started the car on a COLD day from inside the house only to go outside and find a blown engine. However, I like to look at gauges and listen to the motor on the first cold startup in the morning if it's -10° But other than that, they are great in the summer for A/C and when the engine was warmed up but cooled off for a few hours. (huh?)lol When DW and I go out at night to dinner or movie, they are very convienient to come out to a warm car. http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/smiley-noddin-yes.gif -Joe

RE: Camping with a dog . . . is it hard to do

I was going to say that, but didn't want to ruffle any fur amongst members. Not ALL pets are unruly and not all kids are unruly, but just one can make for a bad experiece. Well, there then, I was glad to say it for you. :B

RE: 2008 GM 3500 with 6.0 gas automatic?

The 8.1 is a torque motor. The 6.0 is a rev motor. 2 different animals. If you do a lot of hilly driving pulling a trailer, then no doubt, get the diesel. If you only pull once in a while, and mostly flat areas, get the gasser. If you like smoother less revving, less shifting, get the diesel. The 6.0 will do what you ask, but it will let you know it's doing it. The duramax, on the other hand will do it pretty much flawlessly. Mileage is a bit better with the diesel, but you're paying for it off the start. (and don't tell me resale is better. Of course it is, you paid for it when you bought it) I had the '03 duramax when we pulled our trailer, it was smooth up and down. That engine did everything I asked it to do. I know have an '08 reg cab 4x4 gasser. I use it to plow and pull things around. We have a motorhome now, so I got rid of the diesel, and the price was right on the 3500 gasser. I pull my car trailer and have pulled up to 10,000lbs. It WILL pull it. The 6L90 is a nice transmission. But, there is a difference because of the torque. The 6.0 seems to want to rev up (which is typical for a gas motor) and constantly shift. Once you get used to the shift pattern, you can use the manual button and use it to your advantage. So if you ask if I were to buy a duallie, (not a reg cab, which I have now) which engine I would get, I'd answer the diesel, hands down. You'll really be happier with it. JMO :B -Joe

RE: when time to add anti-gel for diesel?

Rock, Like most fuels, diesel is a mix of hydrocarbons, and the components have different freezing points. For Number 2 diesel, as the ambient temperatures drop toward 32° F (0°C), it begins to cloud, due to the paraffin in the fuel solidifying. As the temperatures drop below 32°F, the molecules combine into solids, large enough to be stopped by the filter. This is known as the gel point, and generally occurs about 15°F (-9.5° C) below the cloud point. This wax then forms a coating on the filter which results in a loss of engine power. The same thing happens on starting an engine when the temperature is below freezing. The filter becomes almost instantly coated with wax - usually, enough fuel gets through to allow the engine to idle, but not attain operating RPM. Put in a good anti gel in late december, (depending where you are in Pa) and you will be just fine. Don't rely on station mixes. I've seen untreated fuel. I've always used http://www.bigwhitetiger.com/totalpower.gifand never had problems down to -20° If you ever do get gelled up, you can use http://www.bigwhitetiger.com/meltdown.gif to thaw it out. These products can be seen here -Joe

RE: Camping with a dog . . . is it hard to do

If my grey "KD" is not welcome, then I don't stay there. I've been in some places where I'd rather deal with the well behaved pets than the kids with no manners running wild. I'd rather be with mis-behaved pets than deal with the kids with no manners running wild. :B

RE: RV Cover.... Help me select one for Paintballs !!

The cover will protect you from the paint, but I would bet depending on the distance to the field that you will get small dents. I personally would find a new place to store it. Protect to an extent. I vote also to finding a new landing spot.

RE: Cover a gasser's grille in the winter?

You sound like a candidate for a remote starter. (although I'm not a fan of them) The worst thing you can do for an engine in the middle of winter is start it up and drive off cold. OUCH. Get a remote starter installed or warm it up. Make sure you're running the correct oil for winter. In a GM 6.0 it is 5W-30. The dipstick heaters help, but are one more thing to do. To me you don't have time to let it warm up, I doubt you'll have time to plug in a heater. Good luck.

RE: speed limit

I guess I need to give a heads up to everyone. I am heading east on US-50 tomorrow from Reno and will be driving 55 to 58 on a 2 lane road, where the speed limit is 65 or better. :B LOL. The OP needs to take his meds. http://homesteadexchangenetwork.net/smf/Smileys/default/MG_CoffeeSpray-2.gif

RE: speed limit

Do not feel bad that Mr. Irate Motorist took you to task.. It does not matter your opinion (Mine is you should not go faster than the maximum posted) there is going to be someone who feels different than you do. Very well said John. I Too have always wondered why people think the speed limit is what you should drive. They want you to maintain it uphills, downhills, sideways, whatever. Then when they get a ticket for exceeding it, they cry. It's the LIMIT. If they laws say you can drive 90, it would be posted. Honestly, I blame commercialism and the fast pace of the world today. People just can't seem to have things fast enough to satisfy them. I get a kick out of the remarks when people see my Camaro. (which is VERY capable of tripling the the speed limits) The first question they ask is "how fast is it". I just laugh at them. They don't have a clue what a car set up like that is about. If I want to go "fast", I take it to the track where I can go as "fast" as I want. But again, that's not the point. They just watch the "zoom zoom zoom" commercials on TV and want to repeat it on the road. Wow, that car will do 80+ mph, I wnat one. How did you put it? Oh yeah, (A.H. in other words). Some people do not understand what it is to relax and enjoy life. They miss so much being fast paced, and will never regain those days lost. I'll never forget this one guy who flew past me on the interstate pulling his fifth wheel. Well, to make a long story short, he just happened to be at the same RVpark as we were staying at. When we pulled in, he was still at the check in lane parked. I asked him if doing 90 mph was safe for him and his family. His reply was, "I only get one week for vacation, so I don't want to miss a minute". I could not believe what I heard, and told him to enjoy his week. -Joe

RE: AFTER MARKET ROTORS

Just buy a good set of reputable rotors. Stay away from the chinese crap. And don't waste your money on the drilled slotted rotors. You'll never use them for the way they were designed to be used.
